Fort Drum emergency officials evacuated and closed the building that houses the post office for about two hours Thursday because of a suspicious package.

Fort Drum’s Twitter account had posted pictures of emergency vehicles at the scene with a warning for people to stay away from Clark Hall, where the post office is located.

The package was found around 9 a.m. Officials determined it was safe by around 11:15 a.m.

“They evacuated the building and are now examining the package,” Julie Halpin, a spokesperson for the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum, said earlier.

Halpin said Clark Hall is one of the main buildings on post. It houses the center that processes soldiers both joining and leaving the division.

Here’s what was originally posted on Fort Drum’s Twitter feed:

“Please be aware: Clark Hall is currently closed. This morning at around 0900 the post office in Clark Hall contacted Emergency Services regarding a suspicious package. DES has closed the building to all patrons and staff until further notice. Please avoid the area.”
